For
our trip to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, we decided to
skip the hotel stay and try the camping facilities
around the park. In a previous trip, we had
discovered the Artillery Ridge Campground, located
just east of the Round Tops, while we were signing
up for a horse back tour. The tour is
offered by the National Riding Stables, which is
located within the campground.
The
campground is one of the largest ones we have
visited over the years. It has facilities for
those who wish to bring their own horses, sites that
are available on a seasonal rate, cabins and
trailers for rent, laundry facilities, recreational
rooms, and play grounds. There is a section
for those who which to tent camp, and most of the RV
sites have water hookups, and a number of those
sites also offer sewer hookups as well. There
is also a nice general store for basic supplies, as
well as a good sized gift shop. One feature we
really enjoyed is that the southern portion of the
battlefield is only a short hike down a trail to the
west, and if you are really feeling ambitious, it is
only a mile hike into town.
