Usually at the beginning and end of camping season,
we visit Pilot Knob State Park in North Central Iowa.
It is a good place for us to break out the equipment
from winter storage, clean it up and test it out.
We are usually there before the water and modern
restrooms are open, but it has electricity year
round, primitive restroom facilities, and a wide
variety of sites to choose from. New to the
2015 camping season is a rebuilt modern restroom and
shower house facility. There is also a new
modernized dump station.
We
have only visited the campground once during the regular
season in the last few years, so I am not certain
how busy it is during the camping season. The
park does have some nice hiking trails, there are a
few ponds for fishing, and there is a wide variety
of wildlife that visits the park.
Pilot Knob is also a stones throw away from Forest
City, Iowa, the home of the Winnebago. There
are some good amenities in town for dinning and
groceries.
