Relatives of mine have lived in Dubuque, I have traveled to and through Dubuque most of my life, but I really did not give its history too much thought.  That was until this trip.  I did not realize that lead is what really was the founding industry that Dubuque was founded on.  The historical markers give a really good, although brief, history of the founding of this city.

The monument above is more than just a historical marker.  According to local information, the founder Julien Dubuque's remains are located on this site.  Though it the information seems to infer this, as well as the marker in the base of the tower, it was not clear as to if his remains were still there or had ever been there.  Local history is a bit uncertain from what we could read around the marker.

This is a very good view of the Mississippi River Valley, and the City of Dubuque in the distance.  You will notice that the traffic on the river is quite busy, as compared to July of this year.  The river had dropped by now and river traffic was returning to normal after the high water from midsummer.
