Gettysburg 2006

We spent our 2nd wedding anniversary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  While we hiked the same areas as in 2003 and 2009, we try to take different routes each time, and visit different places.  The first series of pictures are from Confederate General Robert E. Lee's headquarters, which was located in the extreme northwestern part of town.

We also took a trail ride through the park (the first two photos below.)  They have done quite a bit of work on the horse trails and if I remember right, there were even more trails in 2009 than there were in 2006.  We also discovered a few more walking trails that lead around the backside of the Round Tops and a couple that weaved through the fields near Devil's Den.  The second to last picture in the series below is of a foundation from and old barn that once stood on this site.  I believe it may have been a field hospital during the battle.   The last picture is of the monument that marks the location were Confederate General Lewis Armistead fell mortal wounded after breaching the Union lines during Picket's Charge.

As I mention on the Gettysburg 2009 photo album, the park officials have been working on restoring the battlefield to what it was during the battle.  If you look at the first photo below, you will notice the overhead power lines.  In the 2009 photos of the same location, they are no longer visible as they have been moved under ground.  This has been an on going project for the last several years.  In the last picture, you will notice the bare light colored ground just beyond the tree.  This is the Peach Orchard.  The trees had become infected and when we were here this time, they were treating the soil.  If you look at the 2009 photos, you will notice they trees have been replanted.
