Lake Darling State Park 2010

This was our second visit to Lake Darling State Park in Iowa, and it was over the Forth of July weekend.  We had originally intended to go to a different state park, but due to flooding, we had to find a campsite somewhere else.  Remembering how nice the campground was when we were here before, we decided it was time to visit again.  Also, we believed since the lake was dry (the DNR was still working on the lake preservation), that it would be fairly quiet.  We arrived around 11:30 pm on Thursday, and did not get a good look at the lake until sunrise the next day.  When we awoke, we were surprised at how much water had returned to the lake.  I don't know if it was due to the heavy rain the last few weeks, or something else, but it was really nice to see the lake at about half capacity.  A very pleasant surprise indeed.

When I reserved our campsite, I decided to go with the one we had before.  It was a little larger site, with just about the right amount of shade and great view of the lake.

We decided to take a late evening hike Friday night.  The weather was cool, the critters were in abundance, and the trails freshly mowed.

The park also has a wonderful lodge along the shore of the lake.  It has a really nice great hall, with a good sized kitchen.  Along the shelter side, above the doors are three nice looking stain glass windows.  Unfortunately, it was getting dark and I could not get a photo that would do them justice.

These pictures are of our walk through camp Saturday night.  We headed up the hill, across the little ravine, and down to the other side of the camp.  This gave us a great view of the portion of the campground we were staying in.  Also, you can see we were not the only Scamp onsite.
