Two Harbors, Minnesota 2003

After we left St Croix State Park, we decided to head up to the North Shore of Lake Superior.  One of our first stops was Two Harbors, Minnesota.  It is a wonderful little community to explore.  This trip we spent most of our time down in and around the harbor itself.

One of the sites to see is the tug boat in the back ground of the first picture.  The day we were there, it was closed to tours.   You will also notice the ore dock in the background.  This harbor has three working docks that fill the lake boats with ore for shipment across the lake.  It looks like it is not that far to the dock from this point, but in reality, it is quite a ways away.

There is also a museum, down by the harbor, that used to be a train depot.  There are a couple of trains on display outside, and inside you get a good history of the area and residents.  The depot is also a turn around point for a train that comes up from Duluth a few times a week.

Another item of interest is the wheel house from the Frontenac, a lake boat that used to work the lake.

One of the main attractions is the lighthouse at Two Harbors.  Although it is no longer a working lighthouse, it does still cast a beacon of light upon the water from time to time.  You can also make reservations to stay in the bed and breakfast, and from what I understand, it stays quite busy.

One thing that always seems to be popular among the visitors is walking around the rocky shore, and out along the breakwater of the harbor.  This gives you a good impression of how large this harbor really is; however, I was still fooled by how close the docks look in the third picture.  It wasn't until I saw dock workers walking along the base that I realize they were a lot farther away than they appear.
